IMMANUEL: God With Us
Matthew 1:22-23 Pastor Tom Squashic
Matthew 1:22 NKJ “Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
23 “‘Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us.’”
Isaiah 7:14 NKJ “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
MAIN THOUGHT: Every believer can keep Jesus foremost by understanding the reasons for His name, Immanuel.
The Virgin Birth of Jesus
Matthew 1:18 NKJ “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.”
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.’”
23 “‘Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us.’”
Luke 1:31 NKJ “‘And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.’”
34 “Then Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I do not know a man?’
35 And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.’”
1 Peter 1:23 NKJ “having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,”
God’s Closeness to us through Immanuel
Matthew 1:23 NKJ “…they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us.’”
God is with us!
Matthew 28:20 NKJ “‘…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”
Psalm 23:4 NKJ “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
Hebrews 13:5 NKJ “Let your conduct be without covetousness, and be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”
John 14:23 NKJ “Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
The Holy Spirit lives inside us!
1 Corinthians 3:16 NKJ “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
Ezekiel 36:27 NKJ “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.”
John 14:17 NKJ “even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
Romans 8:9 NKJ “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
2 Corinthians 6:19 NKJ “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?”
2 Corinthians 6:17 “But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.”
We don’t ever have to pray again,
“Lord, please be with me.”
“Father, thank You for sending Jesus, my Immanuel, God with me! Please, thoroughly convince me of Your Presence in my life so that I never doubt Your nearness again! Amen!!“
