Keeping the Fire Burning (part 2)

2 Timothy 1:5-8
MAIN THOUGHT: Every believer can stay full of God’s fire by living out the reminders that Paul gave to Timothy.

LAST WEEK:

Timothy had a genuine faith.

2 Timothy 1:5 NKJ “when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.”

What Marks A Man or Woman of Faith?

– A person who believes and obeys God’s Word
– Applies the Bible to all aspects of life
– Says what the Word says about life - Proper Confession

– Prays all kinds of prayers as directed by the Holy Spirit

prayer of praise,  repentance,  dedication/consecration,  committal,
petition
(supplication),  prayer of confessing God’s Word,  prayer of faith, intercession,  praying in the Spirit (groanings Romans 8:26-27),  warfare prayer,  thanksgiving

– Perseveres until God’s answers come
– Has a steady walk
– Walks in love (Faith works by love.  Gal. 5:6)
– Does not live by sight or feelings, but by trust in God’s Word
– Does not walk in willful sin

Say it: “I am a man / woman of faith!”
(or “I am becoming a man / woman of faith”)

LAST WEEK

Timothy had the gift of God within him.

2 Timothy 1:6 NKJ “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”
New Living Translation: “…fan into flames…”
Phillips: “…stir up that inner fire…”

Acts 2:38 NIV “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.‘”

1 Tim. 4:14 NKJ “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.”  (NIV “the body of elders”)

The Indwelling Holy Spirit

1 Cor 3:16 NKJ “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”

Say it: “I have the Holy Spirit dwelling within me!”

God gave Timothy the spirit of power…

2 Timothy 1:7 NKJ “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
What Is Fear? A mostly negative emotion
Webster:
– “a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined;
– reverential awe
– something that causes fright or apprehension”

Kinds of Fear

1.  healthy - of fire, danger, height
2.  reverential fear of God
3.  paralyzing or destructive fear

“Paul knew that the fire of Timothy’s charisma…was burning low…We should bear in mind the following:
a.  Timothy was handicapped by frequent physical ailments
1 Timothy 5:23 NKJ “No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.”
b.  He was naturally timid
1 Cor 16:10 ‘Now if Timothy comes, see that he may be with you without fear,’[NKJ]; 1 Tim. 1:7-8)
c.  He was, in a sense, ‘a young man’ (1 Tim. 4:12; 2 Tim. 2:22)
He was perhaps, 30-39 years old, but he presided over the elders at Ephesus, some of whom were elderly (10-40 years older), so he was comparatively young.
(Hendriksen, 1 Tim 4:12, p. 157; Expositor’s Bible Comm., Vol. 11, 374)
d.  The Ephesian errorists who opposed him were very determined (1 Tim. 1:3-7, 19, 20; 4:6, 7; 6:3-10; 2 Tim. 2:14-19, 23; 1 Cor. 15:32)
e.  Believers were being persecuted by the State.  Think of Paul (1 Tim. 4:6). (Hendriksen, 2 Timothy, 228-229)

Satan will try all of your life to use fear
