Reminders for Our Faith (part 4)

2 Timothy 1:9    Pastor Tom Squashic

Introduction: Sometimes we get so used to important words of the faith that we allow them to lose their meaning for our lives.  Paul reminds Timothy of two words: SAVED & CALLED

MAIN THOUGHT: Every believer can stay full of God’s fire by living out the reminders that Paul gave to Timothy.

2 Timothy 1:9 NKJ “who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,”

REMIND - to bring back to someone’s attention that which is already known but which is important not to forget

God has saved us.

Salvation definition: forgiveness, deliverance, eternal life, restoration, relationship, freedom, victory, inheritance, righteousness, assurance, authority, fruit, faith, equipping for service

Salvation is a process.

2 Corinthians 2:15 NKJ “For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”   (2 Cor. 4:3, 16)

I was saved.       I am being saved.       I will be saved.
PAST                          PRESENT                           FUTURE

Salvation is not according to my works.

2 Timothy 1:9 NIV “…– not because of anything we have done…”

Ephesians 2:8 NKJ “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Titus 3:5 NKJ “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,”

Hebrews 6:1 - dead works

I cannot do anything to make God love me more than He already does!
All I can do is receive His love and salvation as a gift.

Salvation has come because of God’s purpose.

2 Timothy 1:9 NKJ “…but because of His own purpose…”
Romans 8:28 NAS “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Salvation has come to us because of God’s grace.

2 Timothy 1:9 NIV “…but because of His own purpose and grace,”

Ephesians 2:8 NKJ “For by grace you have been saved through faith…

Titus 3:5-6 “not by works of righteousness…”

Our salvation was planned before time began.

2 Timothy 1:9 NIV “…This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,”
Ephesians 1:4 NIV “For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight…”

God has called us with a holy calling.

2 Timothy 1:9 NIV “who has saved us and called us to a holy life…”

called - elected, selected, chosen, picked out, predestined

Romans 1:7 NKJ “To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints…”
1 Thessalonians 4:7 NKJ “For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.”
1 Peter 1:15 NKJ “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,”
Jude 1:1 NKJ “Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ:”

This calling is not according to our works.

2 Timothy 1:9 NKJ “…a holy calling, not according to our works…”

This calling is according to His own purpose and grace

.
Romans 11:29 “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

(irreversible, unchangeable, unalterable)

Romans 11:29 Amplified “For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. [He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.]”

1 Corinthians 1:23 NKJ “but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness,

24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.

27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;

28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,

29 that no flesh should glory in His presence.”

Ephesians 1:18 “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,”
Ephesians 4:1 NKJ “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to have a walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,”

Ephesians 4:4 NKJ “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;”

(Matthew 4:21; 9:13; 20:16; 22:14; John. 15:15)
2 Thessalonians 1:11 “Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling…” (1 Thess. 2:12)

Hebrews 3:1 “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling…”  (Acts 2:39; 13:2; Philippians 3:14; 1 Peter 2:9)

2 Peter 1:10 “Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;”
(2 Peter 2:5-11; 1 Timothy 6:12; Galatians 5:13)

This calling was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.

2 Timothy 1:9 NKJ “a holy calling…according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,”

Heavenly Father,

Thank You so much for Your saving power in my life!

Thank You for reaching out to me when I had no desire for You.

Thank You for choosing me to be Your child!

Teach me to depend completely on Your grace.

Thank You for Your holy calling on my life!

Open my eyes to know how great Your calling is on me and the Church.

Help me to walk worthy of this calling

So that I can bring honor and glory to Your holy Name!
