Abortion Statistics

The Bad News
Abortion is performed every 20 seconds. That figures to 180 abortions per hour, 4320 per day. Since 1973 (26 years ago) there have been over 38 million abortions in the United States.

In a survey, over 95% of abortions were performed for reasons other than the hard cases, such as: rape, 1.2%, mother’s life endangered, 1.1%, incest,: 0.3%.

The amount of abortions among professing Christian women is about the same as the abortions for non-believers: 20% are Evangelical Christians; 31% are professing Catholics

The Good News
Since the “graphic publicity” concerning the partial birth abortion procedure has been used by the Pro-Life movement, public opinion about abortion has begun to change.

A New York Times/CBS poll showed the number of people who think abortion should be restricted rose from 40% in 1989 to 45%, while the number of people who supported unlimited access dropped, from 40% to 32%. While 61% say abortion should be legal during the first trimester, only 15% want it legal in the second trimester, and a mere 7% in the third.

Comparing 1996 to 1990 (latest figures), Planned Parenthood reports that the percentage of pregnancies ending in abortion was down from 30% to 26%, and the number of abortions has dropped from 1.6 million to 1.3 million per year. The number of abortion clinics has been decreasing. 86% of the counties in the United States has no practicing abortionist. Pregnancy centers have been very effective.
